NORFOLK SOUTHERN TAKING STEPS TO WINTERIZE WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEM

Last Updated on November 9, 2023 at 4:11pm

Norfolk Southern is taking steps to ensure the proper functioning of the wastewater treatment system at the East Palestine remediation site during winter. We are constructing temporary climate-controlled structures and installing ground-based water heaters on the north side of the site to prevent freezing and maintain equipment functionality. Some water vapor may be visible due to the temperature difference, but it poses no health risks. These efforts will not hinder water and air quality monitoring, and regular system testing will continue.

In addition, the clean water bypass system will be rerouted along the NS rail corridor to improve winter performance and reduce the site’s footprint in the community. It will operate as before, pumping clean water into Sulphur Run.
