EPA reports response footprint is shrinking

Last Updated on June 11, 2024 at 11:17am

The Morning Journal published a story about the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s latest report detailing the shrinking response footprint left in East Palestine.

“Community members may notice soil movement activity occurring south of Taggart Street. Water storage is being reduced in that area,” the agency said on its derailment website. “Following storage tank cleanout and removal, ground padding is removed, and topsoil is scraped, piled, and sampled. Once analytical data is received, the soil is shipped to an appropriate facility for final disposal. The area is then ready for final confirmation sampling.”

The report includes the restoration of water flow back into Sulphur Run, which decreases the need for water tanks to aid in the soil restoration efforts. With the last of the impacted dirt excavated and disposed of in October, water flowing through the site is no longer considered an environmental issue.
