The Pittsburgh Foundation donation, New Galilee Festival sponsorship, Farmers Market creation and Community Relief Fund donation support long-term efforts in the region

ATLANTA, JULY 24, 2023 – Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE:NSC) is furthering its commitment to Western Pennsylvania and its agriculture sector. Informed by resident feedback, these efforts include a donation to The Pittsburgh Foundation, sponsorship of the annual New Galilee Carnival with a new farmers market, and an allocation from the Community Relief Fund.

Supporting Western Pennsylvania means listening to the people who call it home,” said Norfolk Southern President and CEO Alan H. Shaw. “Their direct feedback helps us understand what we can do to make a long-term difference, and it’s what drove our recent contribution to The Pittsburgh Foundation, the largest community foundation serving the region. We hope this donation shows our genuine commitment to the region.”

$1 Million Donation to The Pittsburgh Foundation

On Monday, Norfolk Southern announced a $1 million donation to The Pittsburgh Foundation, a community foundation focused on evaluating and addressing community issues, promoting responsible philanthropy, and connecting donors to the critical needs of the community.

The Pittsburgh Foundation will award $250,000 of this funding in 2023 and 2024 to Beaver County and Lawrence County nonprofits. In addition, a $750,000 endowment will be established to provide long-term support to nonprofits in Beaver and Lawrence counties focused on basic human needs; health and wellness; community development; education; workforce; safety; economic development; sustainability and the environment.

Supporting the New Galilee Carnival

Norfolk Southern is sponsoring this year’s New Galilee Carnival, an annual marquee event in the community. Attendees from across Western Pennsylvania will enjoy free admission and rides at the event, July 25-29.

Opportunities for Farmers

With a nod to local agriculture, this year’s carnival will also feature a market to purchase produce and other goods from local Pennsylvania farmers. Farmers will receive a $1,000 stipend to set up a booth and will earn an additional five percent on top of generated sales.

“We want to help keep farming traditions alive. These dedicated Pennsylvanians don’t just feed their communities. They feed our country,” said Shaw, “We’re proud to support the continued growth of Western Pennsylvania farming for generations to come.”

Allocating the Community Relief Fund

Norfolk Southern has previously established a $1 million Community Relief Fund for Western Pennsylvania residents. In collaboration with elected officials, the company will allocate $660,000 of the relief fund to Darlington Township and $340,000 to Lawrence County to distribute within their communities.

This brings Norfolk Southern’s total financial commitment in Western Pennsylvania to approximately $8.6 million.
